Aromatherapy safely: basic guidelines for using essential oils at home (pets/children).

Aromatherapy safely: basic guidelines for using essential oils at home (pets/children).

Basic rules for safe use

  • Dose sparingly: for diffusers start with 2–4 drops (200–300 ml of water). Reduce the dose in small rooms.

  • Alternate and ventilate: run the diffuser in cycles (30–60 min on, then a break). Brief airing reduces the risk of irritation.

  • Store in the dark and cool: EOs belong in dark glass, away from sun, tightly closed.

  • Watch skin contact: without dilution know-how (carrier oils), it’s safer to avoid direct skin application.

Children: what’s OK and what isn’t

  • Infants and toddlers: very gentle scents or preferably no diffuser—ventilation, fresh air and possibly hydrosols are safer choices.

  • Preschoolers/school-age: tolerate short, mild diffusions of gentle oils (e.g., lavender in the evening). Avoid oils with potential neuro/respiratory irritancy (strong mint/eucalyptus at high doses).

  • Sleep: in kids’ rooms choose gentle scents, briefly before bedtime, always with ventilation.

Pets — more sensitive noses

  • Cats and birds are extremely sensitive—avoid running a diffuser in a closed room with no escape route. Some oils (e.g., tea tree) can be problematic for cats.

  • Dogs tolerate mild scents better, but still: low dose, ventilation, freedom to leave the room.

  • If the animal coughs, sneezes, or seems uneasy, immediately switch off the diffuser and air out.

Oils to handle with care

  • Strong menthols/camphor (e.g., peppermint, eucalyptus, ravensara) at high doses may irritate airways—especially in children and pets.

  • Flammability with candles: oils are flammable—for scented candles use a ready-made product designed to burn, not DIY “dripping EO into wax” without know-how.

  • Photosensitizing citrus (e.g., bergamot): avoid direct skin application before sun exposure (room diffusion is fine—just don’t increase doses).

Practical scenarios that work

  • Evening relax: Diffuser + lavender/sandalwood for 20–40 minutes, then pause and briefly air.

  • Focus at work: lemon or rosemary in an ultrasonic diffuser for 30 minutes—adds a “freshly aired” feel and clarity.

  • Sleep: 2–3 drops of lavender in the diffuser 30 minutes before bed, then switch off.

  • Quick refresh (kitchen/bathroom): Natural air freshener—spray with citronella/lemongrass for 2–3 spritzes, then air after a few minutes.

Practical kit: Ultrasonic diffuser, reed diffuser (hall/living room), natural scented candle (evening ritual), natural air freshener, lavender EO, lemon EO.
Golden rule: Gently, with breaks, and with ventilation. Scents should uplift you, not tire you out.
