Calendula – a piece of nature for our health

Calendula – a piece of nature for our health

Calendula officinalis is considered one of the most valuable herbs that nature could provide us with. The effects of this lovely orange-coloured flower were already known to the ancient Egyptians, who used it in ointments to rejuvenate the skin. Folk healers often used marigold oil to heal wounds, or administered marigold to their patients in the form of tea for digestive problems. However, there is much more that marigold can boast about. Discover its beneficial effects for yourself.

You can recognise Calendula officinalis relatively easily. It has deep orange or yellow petals in the shape of a nail (hence the name calendula) and usually grows to a height of 30–70 cm. It blooms from summer to autumn, and its flowers should be harvested every 2 to 4 days to encourage the growth of new flowers.

The healing power of flowers

The most valuable part of the Calendula officinalis is traditionally its flowers. They contain bitters and flavonoids, which are known for their anti-inflammatory and antiviral effects. In addition, calendula petals are also rich in vitamins A, B, C, E, calcium, magnesium, and beta-carotene and lutein, which benefit eye health and visual acuity. In addition to using whole petals, calendula flowers can be ground into a powder or made into oils, creams, soaps or healing ointments.

5 reasons why calendula is so exceptional for healthy skin

Calendula officinalis has a broad-spectrum effect and can address a variety of health problems.

  1. Helps to heal wounds

Calendula officinalis is valued primarily for its soothing abilities. It is beneficial in the treatment of wounds (even those that are difficult to heal), including insect bites, bruises, blisters, cuts or cold sores, as it helps the growth of new tissue.

This medicinal herb is also effective in treating minor burns and also serves as mild protection from the sun. It reduces swelling and, thanks to its antibacterial and antifungal effects, can prevent secondary infection, leading to a faster healing process.

  1. Hydrates and nourishes dry skin

In medical cosmetics, marigold is used to alleviate many types of skin conditions that can cause dry, itchy, or irritated areas. It soothes skin with symptoms of eczema, dermatitis or dandruff. It supports the formation of collagen, the basic protein of "youth", and helps maintain optimal skin hydration. It is excellent for stretch marks.

  1. Treats sensitive skin

Although marigold also has a cleansing and antibacterial effect, it is very well tolerated by people with extremely sensitive skin and children. That is why marigold is very often used as an ingredient in baby cosmetics. Marigold soap gently washes baby's skin without drying it out, and a gentle marigold bath soothes the baby before a night's sleep. Calendula is a great aid in treating nappy rash and prickly heat.

  1. Slows down the formation of wrinkles

Oxidative stress plays a major role in the aging process, as well as in the development of several diseases of civilisation. Calendula oil contains a high proportion of antioxidants, which protects the skin and slows down its aging. It is also an excellent fighter against age spots. We also swear by calendula oil, which is why you will find it, among other things, in our softening products for the whole family.

  1. Helps reduce scars, acne and soothes

One of the significant benefits of marigold is its ability to soften scars. It promotes a fast and healthy healing process, the growth of new healthy tissue and prevents the development of infection. It also helps with skin ulcers such as chickenpox and acne. Marigold softens and soothes the skin, prevents inflammation, strengthens the immune response, thanks to which the wounds heal quickly and cleanly. Marigold flower extract has significant soothing effects, and is therefore an excellent ingredient in hand creams and body lotions.
