Conventional? Natural? Or Organic Cosmetics?

CONVENTIONAL COSMETICS

It's easy to recognise, so there should be no problem avoiding it:

  • Synthetic substances: There is no requirement to use any natural ingredients in the production of conventional cosmetics.These come from the chemical industry, mostly from China.
  • Cheap ingredients: Synthetic and laboratory-modified ingredients are much cheaper than natural ones. Therefore, they are more profitable for the cosmetics industry.
  • Harmful to the environment: All synthetic substances contaminate the air, water and soil of our planet and have a negative impact on the climate, animals and ourselves.
  • Harmful to health: Many artificial substances contain a risk of allergies, irritation or serious diseases such as cancer.
  • Minimum amount of natural ingredients: Sometimes natural ingredients are added to conventional cosmetic products for advertising purposes, but in quantities that are so small that they have no effect.
  • Misleading marketing: Although natural active substances are reduced to a minimum, this does not prevent advertising from highlighting these substances. Please note: On the ingredient list (INCI), they are found in the last places. This means that their quantity is minimal, often below 0.5%
  • Threat: Some ingredients can be extremely dangerous.

NATURAL COSMETICS

Currently, there is no specific definition of natural or organic cosmetics in any country. Based on the example of the organic – Organic food sector, several private companies have started to set standards and requirements that products must meet if they are to be rated as natural or organic.
There are several standards, and most of them state different criteria. Here we bring you those that relate to natural cosmetics:

  • 90% or more: The majority of the content (at least 90%) consists of natural or organic ingredients.
  • Kind to the environment: Production processes are as kind as possible to the environment.
  • Respectful of animals: Ingredients of animal origin are permitted as long as they do not come from dead animal parts.
  • No animal testing: Neither the final product nor any of its ingredients are tested on animals
  • No harmful production processes: It is forbidden to use substances or production processes that pose a threat, such as genetically modified organisms or radiation.
  • Ecological packaging: Ecological, recyclable or already recycled packaging is usually used.

ORGANIC COSMETICS

Keep in mind: “Everything that is organic is natural, but not everything that is natural is organic.”!

BIO products have all the positive attributes of natural products. In addition, they must meet other strict criteria:

  • Ingredients grown in organic agriculture: All BIO products are natural and guarantee that they have not been grown, harvested or produced by unauthorised processes.
  • Products labelled as BIO in the EU: Most active ingredients are of plant or animal origin. These substances can only be labelled as BIO if they comply with EU standard CE834/2007. In the INCI list, they are marked with an asterisk (e.g. "sesamum indicum seed oil*") and with the note "* from organic agriculture" under the list of ingredients.
  • Much more environmentally friendly: BIO products pose no risk even after use. No chemical or synthetic substances have been applied to the plants or animals from which they originate.
  • Animal-friendly: animal ingredients do not come from dead animals and are not tested on them.
  • No questionable ingredients: They do not contain any ingredients or chemical compounds that are not completely safe for the environment, human life and health, and have not been modified by questionable processes.
  • Organic products are subject to much greater control than natural ones, although even here, unfair practices cannot be avoided.

RECOMMENDATIONS:

  • use products that contain a larger amount of active organic ingredients, so don't forget to check the label with the ingredient content (INCI).
  • we consider "cosmetic organic products" to be those that are natural and contain active organic ingredients. And the “top cosmetic bio products” are those which contain at least 90% of BIO ingredients... without a doubt the best!
  • Please note that only those ingredients that have a bio origin are marked with an asterisk in the INCI list. In no case are they natural substances that do not have the BIO label.
