Diaper dermatitis part I.
What is nappy rash and how does it develop?
In other words, skin inflammation. Nappy rash is caused by the action of unwanted factors on delicate baby skin. Urine, faeces and sweat are the main enemies that irritate very sensitive baby skin. In addition, the nappy is non-breathable, which makes the condition even worse. Skin irritation is also caused by the skin rubbing against the surface of the nappy. Baby skin is very thin, less resistant to infections and is dry. Dryness is caused by lower activity of the sebaceous glands, which makes irritation more frequent. Baby skin needs our 100% care every day.
Causes of nappy rash:
- Unsuitable nappies, less frequent nappy changes
- Use of unsuitable cosmetics (creams, shampoos, oils)
- Frequent and lengthy bathing (causes drying of already dry baby skin)
- Frequent and loose stools (for example, when changing diet, starting solids)
Let's start with regular nappy changes. Nappies should always be changed before and after feeding. By changing nappies, the mother can also check whether her baby is urinating enough, which means they are sufficiently hydrated. The choice of nappies is very important for the health and comfort of babies. Here are some tips on how to choose the right ones:
- Excellent absorbency
- Almost no allergic reactions
- Softness
- Quality
- Secure fastenings (to keep them in place at all times)
- Correct size
Size distribution by weight:
Size 0: up to 2.5 kg
Size 1: from 2.5 to 5 kg
Size 2: from 3 to 6 kg
Size 3: from 4 to 9 kg
Size 4: from 7 to 14 kg
Size 4+: from 9 to 16 kg
Size 5: from 9 to 25 kg
Size 6: over 15 kg

Never forget! It's definitely better to choose a larger nappy than a smaller one. Babies grow fast. When choosing nappies, age doesn't matter, weight does.
Also, pay attention to choosing the right baby cosmetics. What should it contain?
- 100% natural composition
- Oil is more suitable than cream due to its easier application on sensitive baby skin
- Contains shea butter (containing fatty acids, vitamins A and E, and phenols, which have antioxidant effects, in addition to cleansing ingredients, softening and moisturising properties, providing hydration and lubrication to the skin.
- Paraben-free
- Allergen-free
- Free of dyes and alcohol
- Unperfumed cosmetics
Symptoms of nappy rash:
It manifests as redness of the skin, dry scaly diaper rash on the surface of the skin, which is warmer to the touch, and small rashes may also appear. This milder form of dermatitis can usually be managed by the mother herself without the help of doctors, using over-the-counter remedies.
A more severe form of nappy rash can manifest as weeping, intensely red sores extending into the blood, which are very painful to the touch. Some sores can extend from the bottom to the genitals, and this condition is often accompanied by a baby's fever.
