Essential oils, or when less is more
What are essential oils?
Essential oils are concentrated plant extracts that retain the natural scent or 'essence' of their source.
Unique aromatic compounds give each essential oil its characteristic essence.
To create one bottle of essential oil, a large number of plants need to be processed, so essential oils are very concentrated.
The method of oil production is important, because essential oils obtained by chemical processes are not considered to be true essential oils.

Essential oils are mostly obtained by the steam distillation method. Due to the high concentration, they should be handled with maximum care - a maximum of 1-20% solution (therefore, it is recommended to mix them into creams). To avoid irritation, test the oil on a small patch of skin and monitor it for 24 hours. Consumption is not recommended (only under medical supervision). Pregnant women should consider avoiding the use of some oils altogether.
Essential oils should be stored in glass bottles (preferably dark glass) in a dark and cool place to prevent premature deterioration.
Vegetable oils are also extracted from plants. Unlike essential oils, they are produced by cold pressing (e.g. coconut, olive, sunflower, …). Vegetable oils can be used directly on the skin and are recommended for diluting essential oils.
What's the best way to use them?
The answer depends on your goal. Application to the skin is most suitable for solving skin problems. Any form of inhalation helps with psychological problems and mild breathing problems.
