Rose oil production

There are various legends and disputes surrounding the production of rose oil and rose water, including when it all actually began. In the Middle Ages, copper pots were used in India to produce rose oil, with small quantities of rose oil being produced through a single distillation process.

Distillation

A Bulgarian rose oil producer invented a method of double distillation and added several improvements to the production process. This not only increased the quantity of rose oil produced, but also preserved its fantastic properties and delicate fragrance, gradually displacing Kashmiri and Arabian rose water and rose oil. The quantity of rose oil produced is measured in a special unit – 1 muskal. 1 muskal of rose oil = 4.9844 g, i.e. approximately 5 grams. As rose oil is extremely expensive, smaller packages in quantities of 1, 2, 3 or 5 grams have also started to be produced.

The beginning of the production of Bulgarian rose oil was first documented in 1800 in the town of Klisura. Giulpan (or distillery) is built near a flowing water source. The processing of the rose flower takes place in small copper vessels that are installed under awnings. Extracted rose oil is stored in special copper vessels.
