PLA packaging - a sustainable solution for the future

PLA packaging - a sustainable solution for the future

Significant resources are constantly being invested in the development of environmentally friendly alternatives that would reliably degrade ecologically at the end of their life. The determination to find a solution has paid off with polylactic acid (PLA). It is made from renewable sources such as corn starch or sugar cane. This natural polymer was designed as a substitute for commonly used petroleum-based plastics. In the packaging industry, PLA plastics are used for plastic films, medicine packaging and food containers. With the growing PLA industry, we are creating many more possibilities for using the material.

PLA in points:

  • its production consumes less energy and causes fewer greenhouse gases to be created than the production of petroleum-based plastics

  • in a controlled environment they are completely rdecomposable and compostable

  • The disadvantage is that composting must take place in designated facilities, which speed up decomposition (the process can be lengthy).

  • Shorter PLA lifespan (6 months from manufacture)

  • Non-toxic, harmless to health

By investing in more “eco-friendly” packaging solutions like this, companies are showing commitment and taking positive steps towards a more sustainable future.
