Tips for proper tanning
What is tanning?
Not all tanning is created equal. With all the articles and reports about how it is necessary to protect ourselves from sunlight, and when the sun is shining we must be closed at home, we feel that the sun is something harmful and can only harm us. Of course, the risks of excessive sunbathing are very well documented, and excessive spending time in the sun without SPF is one of the causes of melanoma. However, a 10-minute walk on a sunny day doesn't equate to sunbathing or excessive sun exposure.
By sunbathing, we mean the act of sitting or lying in the sun. Sunbathing has numerous benefits for our body. Firstly, sunlight increases our serotonin levels, which improves mood and promotes feelings of happiness. Exposure to the sun helps the body create vitamin D, which has a beneficial effect on the skin, hair, nails, teeth and bones. Vitamin D helps the body fight various diseases and strengthens our immune system.
However, excessive sun exposure carries various risks. Excessive tanning can lead to so-called sun rash, sunburn, or melanoma. It is important to know the dangers of tanning so that we can avoid them and tan correctly and safely.
Tips for proper tanning:
- Choosing the right sunscreen
When choosing the right sunscreen, we must ensure that the SPF can protect us from both UVA and UVB radiation. Because not every SPF protects us from both types of radiation. Dermatologists recommend SPF 30, which filters 97% of UVB radiation, and SPF 50, which filters 98% of UVB radiation.
- Applying sunscreen
Sunscreen should be applied 15 minutes before you plan to start sunbathing. After each swim, a new layer of sunscreen should be applied to the body. When sunbathing for longer periods, a new layer of cream should be applied every two hours.
- Know your tanning limit
Your skin reaches its tanning limit when it can no longer physically produce more melanin (tanning pigment). From this point on, you stop tanning and expose your skin to the risk of UV damage. You'll usually reach your tanning limit after 2–3 hours in the sun. In the case of fairer skin, much sooner.
- Take breaks and cover your head
Breaks in the sun reduce the intensity of UV radiation and reduce the risk of sunburn. Tanning will be healthier and longer-lasting. When exposed to direct sunlight, head covering is important.
- Stay hydrated
During the summer and especially when overexposed to the sun's rays, it is important to stay hydrated and stay hydrated. It is also advisable to consume fruit, which contains a naturally large amount of water.
- Use after-sun cream
The skin is dehydrated and irritated after tanning. To soothe the skin after tanning, it is necessary to hydrate it. This will make your tan last longer.
