Why is my hair falling out?

Why is my hair falling out?

Hair, the crown of beauty. At least, that's how almost all of us know this comparison. It applies not only to women, but also to men. But what if that's not the case, and we struggle daily with full combs and brushes? Have you also noticed that as soon as spring and autumn arrive, your mane loses volume, and quite noticeably? So, let's break down what hair is, how it works, and how to reduce hair loss.

What is hair?

Hair looks like a string from the outside, but in reality, it's a bunch of accumulated cells – keratin fibres. From a chemical point of view, hair keratin is composed of amino acids that hold it together.

Hair is divided into two parts. The lower part, which we cannot see, and the upper part, which we can see. In the lower part, the hair is located in the bulb, which is the base. The hair passes through the sebaceous gland, hair sheath, skin until we reach the upper part of the hair.

Types of hair

The average person has approximately 100,000 hairs on their head. It also depends on the type and colour. Fair-haired people have an average of 60,000 more hairs than redheads. But of course, these are not all the hairs that are found on the human body. The remaining hairs are made up of fine hairs and facial hair. There are around 2 million hairs on one person's body. They are divided into three main categories:

  1. Lanugo (translated as secret) - the least visible fine hairs,
  2. Vellus - downy hair,
  3. Terminal hairs - longer type of hair: facial hair, eyelashes, eyebrows.

Hair growth

You've probably asked yourself why your hair falls out on its own every day. Everything evolves, grows, dies - passes away. Hair also works on this principle. Hair growth occurs in specific cycles that take place in three phases:

  1. Anagen - growth phase

The papilla is located at the bottom of the hair. The hair grows from this part. All the nutrients needed for hair growth are supplied here. The cells gradually move upwards, becoming cornified and keratinised. The growth phase lasts 5-7 years and approximately 80%-85% of the hair is in this phase.

  1. Catagen - transitional phase

In the transitional phase, development stops. The hair bulb thickens, causing the papilla to "close" and preventing the supply of nutrients. In this phase, only 1% of the hair is present, and it lasts approximately one month.

  1. Telogen - resting phase

Resting phase - here, the hair detaches from the papilla and falls out, while in this process, the growth phase starts again, meaning new hair grows. Hair loss is natural. It happens, for example, when combing or washing. In this phase, approximately 14% of the hair is present, and it lasts approximately as long as the transitional phase, 1 month.

Summary

In today's topic, we have summarised the essence of hair, the hair cycle and the natural way of hair loss. If the number of hairs that fall out daily is up to 50, you don't have to worry, it's natural. Of course, you won't collect and count your hair, but you can see with your eyes whether the amount is large or not. An unhealthy number of hairs falling out is around 100 and may already indicate a form of hair loss. But more on that in the next article. So, if you are concerned about this problem, be sure not to miss the next one, which we will add soon.
