Throat, nose and mouth – quick help
1) General tips for quick relief & prevention
- Air humidity 40-60% + regular ventilation. Dry air = dry mucous membranes.
- Warmth and peace for the voice: warm scarf, avoid smoke, talk/whisper less.
- Frequent drinking: warm water/tea after frequent sips
- Nasal hygiene: isotonic sea salt 2-4 times a day; after returning from public transport/school.
- Gargle: lukewarm salt water 2–4 times a day (gentle and effective).
- Dental/oral hygiene: soft brush, changing the brush after illness, gentle pastes without irritating menthols for sensitive people.
2) What to eat (with regard to mucous membranes)
- Hot soups and broths, porridge, steamed vegetables – they are not burdensome and hydrate.
- With (1–2 teaspoons/day) in lukewarm tea – not for children < 1 year.
- Citrus, pepper, berries – natural vitamin C; with a sensitive throat, soft, liquid forms (smoothie, compote) are preferable.
- Spices for the kitchen: ginger, turmeric + pinch of pepper, garlic (if it doesn't irritate the stomach).
- Fermenty (kefir, sauerkraut/kimchi) + fiber – the microbiome will indirectly support the mucous membranes.
- Limit alcohol, very hot/icy drinks and very hot foods (irritating to the throat).
3) What herbs to use and how
For the first throat scratch / hoarseness:
- Medicinal sage – gargle (infusion 2–4 times a day), possibly spray in the neck.
- Rapeseed – careful gargling/tea for irritated mucous membranes.
- Chamomile – tea to calm down; in sensitive i hydrolate (spray in the air/on a tissue).
- Iceland lichen – lozenges for "wrapping" the neck (kids love it).
- Slimy herbs: Mallow/Mallow – tea/decoction 1-2 times a day for a dry, irritating cough.

For the nose and sinuses:
- Inhalation (5–10 min) from hot water with chamomile or thyme (watch out for asthma - shorter, be careful).
- Nasal irrigation isotonic solution (teapot, spray) – 1–2 times a day, gently.
Herbs for the respiratory tract when cough/cold is added:
- Thyme / Motherwort – tea or syrup 2–3 times a day.
- Plantain – syrup/tea for "scratching" and mucus.
- Beech (flower/fruit), Linden (flower) – tea for warmth and comfort when you catch a cold.
Aromatherapy & hydrolates:
- Diffuse EO: Ravintsara, Eucalyptus radiata, Lavender, Pine, Thyme CT linalool – 10–15 min, 2–3 times a day.
- Children 3+, pregnant and sensitive: short diffusion, delicate oils (lavender, eucalyptus radiata), proper dilution, EO never directly into the nose.
- Hydrolates (chamomile, rose, lavender): room spray/handkerchief to humidify the air.
In general: tea 1–3 times a day, syrups according to the label, tinctures usually 2-3 times a day. AT licorice with caution in hypertension. Propolis – watch out for allergies to bee products.
4) What dietary supplements to choose (short-term support for the throat/nose/mouth)
- Vitamin D3 (+K2) – seasonal base.
- Vitamin C 200–500 mg/day (or over rose/buckthorn in drinks).
- Zinc – can also be in lozenge form for a local effect in the mouth.
- Beta-glucans (mushroom, Coriolus) – daily during the season.
- Elderberry (without black - extract) – a short-term favorite in the cold season.
- Propolis – spray/lozenges as an oral care supplement.
Mini routine
In the morning: nasal sea water, D3+K2, lukewarm chamomile/rosehip.
During the day: Gargling sage 2–3×, lozenge with Icelandic lichen or zinc, drink warm water.
Evening: inhalation (chamomile/thyme) 5–10 min, short lavender diffusion before going to bed, a warm scarf.
