Production of household cleaning products

Nowadays, more and more people are looking for ways to reduce the use of chemicals in the home and replace them with natural alternatives. One of the easiest ways to achieve this is to make your own cleaning products using natural substances such as essential oils, vinegar, baking soda and more. These products are not only more environmentally friendly, but also gentler on our health and often cheaper than commercial products.

Basic ingredients for homemade cleaning products

  1. Vinegar
Vinegar is one of the best natural cleaning agents. It has strong disinfectant properties that help get rid of bacteria and mould. Vinegar also effectively removes limescale, grease and unpleasant odours. White vinegar is most commonly used for cleaning purposes.

  2. Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate)
Baking soda is a versatile cleaning agent that neutralises odours and effectively cleans surfaces. It can be used alone or in combination with other ingredients. It also has gentle abrasive properties that are ideal for cleaning surfaces without scratching them.

  3. Essential oils
Essential oils not only add a pleasant scent to your cleaning products, but many of them also have antibacterial, antifungal and antiseptic properties. Popular essential oils for cleaning include lavender, lemon, tea tree, peppermint and eucalyptus.

  4. Lemon juice
Lemon juice is another great natural cleaning agent. Thanks to the acidity of lemons, it is very effective at dissolving dirt and removing stains. Lemon also has a pleasant and refreshing fragrance.

  5. Cornstarch
Cornstarch is great for polishing and removing grease from surfaces like windows or mirrors. You can mix it with water to create a paste that is easy to apply and clean.

Cleaning silver with baking soda, water and aluminium foil

Silver can lose its shine and darken over time due to oxidation. However, there's a simple way to restore silver's original shine using readily available household items.

What you'll need:

  • 1 tablespoon of baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • hot water
  • a piece of aluminium foil
  • a container (e.g. bowl)

Instructions:

  1. Line the container with aluminium foil, with the shiny side facing up.
  2. Place the silver items you want to clean into the container.
  3. Sprinkle baking soda and salt over the silver.
  4. Pour hot water over the silver, ensuring it is completely submerged.
  5. Let it sit for a few minutes (3–5 minutes) or longer if the silver is heavily tarnished.
  6. Remove the silver, rinse it with clean water, and dry it with a soft cloth.

The chemical reaction between the baking soda, salt, and aluminium foil causes the oxidation (black layer) to transfer from the silver's surface to the foil, restoring the silver's shine.

Conclusion

Making your own cleaning products from natural ingredients is not only an environmentally friendly solution, but also a healthy and economical one for your home. With these simple recipes, you can keep your home clean while contributing to environmental protection. Moreover, with a natural silver cleaner, you can also get rid of tarnished jewellery or cutlery and restore their original beauty.
