Sensitive Skin Under the Microscope: Facts and Myths You Should Know
Do you feel like your skin reacts to everything? Redness, tightness, itching, or unexpected breakouts are an everyday reality for many of us. Sensitive skin is not a diagnosis, but a condition that requires a specific approach. However, there are many half-truths surrounding this topic.
Let’s take a closer look together at what is true and what is just a well-fed myth, and how the pure power of nature can help you in your skincare routine.
1. Myth: Sensitive skin is a skin type you are born with
Fact: Sensitivity can be inborn (a genetic predisposition to eczema or rosacea), but very often it is acquired. It is caused by a disrupted skin barrier as a result of stress, environmental pollution, or – most commonly – improperly chosen cosmetics (aggressive cleansing, too many active ingredients).
Our tip: If your skin barrier is damaged, look for products with plant-based ceramides and oat oil.
2. Myth: Natural cosmetics are always safe for sensitive skin
Fact: This is a dangerous misconception. Nature can also be powerful. Many essential oils (e.g. cinnamon or citrus oils) can irritate sensitive skin.
One drop of essential oil is like a concentrate from several kilograms of herbs. Applying pure cinnamon essential oil to your face is like a chemical attack for skin cells. Your skin does not know it comes from a plant — it only feels that it burns.
Do not forget that if you apply a cream with natural lemon oil to your skin and go out into the sun, you may end up with unpleasant spots or burns. In this case, nature combined with sunlight can harm the skin more than help it.
3. Fact: Less is more when it comes to sensitive skin
The more skincare products you layer on your skin, the higher the risk that some ingredients will clash and cause irritation.
When layering products, we often unknowingly combine ingredients that do not work well together:
-
Retinol + vitamin C: Too strong of a combination.
-
Acids (AHA/BHA) + retinol: A recipe for peeling and burning.
-
Natural oils + too many emulsifiers: This can lead to clogged pores (due to comedogenicity) and subsequent inflammation.
The ideal routine for sensitive skin:
-
Gentle cleansing: An oil balm or cleansing milk (no aggressive foaming agents).
-
Hydration: Floral water (hydrosol) – for example from lavender or rose.
-
Protection: A high-quality facial oil or a cream with a clean formula.

4. Myth: Sensitive skin does not need exfoliation
Fact: Even sensitive skin needs to get rid of dead skin cells, otherwise it appears dull and pores become clogged. However, forget about harsh mechanical scrubs with gritty particles.
5. Fact: Hot water is the enemy
Water that is too hot during showering or face washing strips the skin of its natural oils. The result is a feeling of tightness and red patches. Always use lukewarm water and after washing, gently pat your face dry with a towel — never rub it.
Our favourites for soothing the skin:
