Chlorella and health: A natural path to detoxification and vitality

Chlorella and health: A natural path to detoxification and vitality

What is chlorella?

Chlorella is a single-celled green algae with a deep green colour, which is due to its high chlorophyll content. It was discovered in the 19th century, but serious scientific interest in it arose after the Second World War, when it was studied as a possible source of sustainable nutrition for a growing population.

Of the more than 30 types of chlorella, Chlorella vulgaris is most commonly used in nutritional supplements.

In its raw form, chlorella is indigestible for humans, which is why it is mechanically processed – the so-called breaking of the cell wall allows the release of nutrients and their better absorption.

Chlorella effects: Why include it in your diet?

1. Detoxification support

Chlorella can bind heavy metals and toxic substances (mercury, cadmium, lead) and helps eliminate them from the body. This effect will be appreciated by people living in polluted environments or those looking for natural detoxification support.

2. Rich source of nutrients

  • Proteins: approximately 50–60% of the weight of chlorella is made up of complete vegetable proteins with a complete spectrum of essential amino acids.

  • Vitamins: B vitamins, vitamin B, vitamin C, vitamin E and vitamin K.

  • Minerals: iron, magnesium, potassium, calcium, zinc.

  • Chlorophyll: the highest content of all plants – contributes to the oxygenation and purification of the body.

Some processed forms of chlorella also contain vitamin B12, which is especially important for vegans and vegetarians.

3. Immunity support

Bioactive substances, such as beta-glucans and nucleic acids, can stimulate the immune response of the body and increase its resistance to infections.

4. More energy and vitality

Iron and B vitamins support red blood cell production and improve oxygen transport, which can lead to reduced fatigue and improved overall performance.

Chlorella vs. Spirulina

When comparing chlorella spirulina, it's good to know that although they are algae, they have different effects:

  • Chlorella – high chlorophyll content, strong detoxification and support for blood formation.

  • Spirulina – higher in phycocyanin and easily digestible proteins, ideal for a quick energy boost.

Many people opt for a combination of chlorella and spirulina for a synergistic effect – chlorella cleanses, spirulina nourishes.

Chlorella side effects

Although chlorella is safe for most people, it can have side effects, especially if larger than recommended doses are taken.

  • Temporary digestive issues – bloating, loose stools.

  • Allergic reactions in sensitive individuals.

  • Possible worsening of autoimmune diseases (effect on immunity).

  • Interaction with blood-thinning medications (due to vitamin K content).

Recommendation: start with a low dose (approx. 1 g daily) and gradually increase it.

How to incorporate chlorella into your diet

  • Powder – add to smoothies, juices or cold drinks.
  • Tablets/capsules – easy to dose.

  • Mixes with spirulina or green barley – for complex nutrition.

Typical daily dose: 2–5 g to support vitality, may be higher for detoxification.

Chlorella is a nutritionally rich superfood that can help with detoxification, immune support and increased energy. With proper dosing, it is an ideal supplement for anyone who wants to support health naturally.
